A delegation led by the Turkish Ambassador to Ethiopia, Berk Baran, has submitted a project proposal to establish a transplant center in Ethiopia at St. Paul’s Hospital.
The project, which is being implemented with the support of the Turkish Transplant Foundation, the Turkish Cooperation Agency, and the International Transplant Network, will help expand the provision of cell, tissue, and organ transplant services in Ethiopia.
Minister of Health Dr. Mekdes Daba, who recalled that the Health Proclamation recently approved by the House of Representatives includes organ transplants, said that there is still an unmet need for organ transplant services in our country. She added that a draft guideline for the provision of cell, tissue and organ transplant services has been prepared to expand the service.
The Director General of the Blood and Tissue Bank, Dr. Ashenafi Tazebew, said that the project proposal presented by the delegation will enhance the organ and tissue transplant services being provided in our country; he said that the proposed project plan should be in line with the plan of the Blood and Tissue Bank.
The project includes the establishment of a national organ transplant coordination center, the establishment of an organ transplant center at St. Paul's Hospital, the establishment of an organ-transplant simulation training center, and the training of professionals.
The importance of the project proposal to establish an organ transplant center in Ethiopia is profound; This aims to address the unmet need for organ transplantation in the country.
The project will not only save lives, improve health outcomes, and build sustainable organ transplantation services in Ethiopia by expanding access to cell, tissue, and organ transplant, but will also contribute to the improvement of the country’s overall health care system.
In a related development, Minister of Health Dr. Mekdes Daba met with Turkish Ambassador to Ethiopia Berk Baran to discuss the financing of the project and ways to further strengthen the relationship between the two countries in the health sector.
