Cure Blindness Project Announces 36,000 Cataract Surgeries done in one year

A delegation led by Cure Blindness Project CEO Kathleen Overbay met with State Minister of Health Dr. Dereje Duguma and senior officials from the Ministry of Health.

Dr. Dereje Duguma said that Cure Blindness Project is one of the organizations working with the Ministry of Health on eye care in Ethiopia; he said that the institution, especially the training of doctors is yielding great benefits in the sector.

Dr. Dereje, who praised the organization for providing eye care services to citizens who were previously unable to access them, especially in conflict-affected areas, and said that the Ministry of Health will continue to strengthen its support for the organization.

Cure Blindness Project CEO Kathleen Overbay said the organization will continue to provide training to doctors to improve the quality and accessibility of eye care in Ethiopia. In particular, she said they want to work closely with the Ministry of Health to improve the services provided by primary health institutions.

The Ministry of Health plans to expand the eye bank service, which is only available in Addis Ababa, to the regions, said Ato Lelisa Amanuel, Head of the Office of the State Minister for Health, Services and Programs at the Ministry of Health; he thanked the Cure Blindness Project for its contributions so far.
