The visit of WHO Deputy Director-General and Acting Regional Director for Africa, Chikwe Ihekweazu, was said to be instrumental in addressing the country’s various health challenges, and during their discussions, they discussed ways to improve Ethiopia’s overall health services.
They discussed ways to strengthen Ethiopia’s primary health services; ways to improve medical facilities, train health workers, and ensure the availability of essential medicines. They also discussed ways to ensure a strong health system and effectively respond to the health needs of the community and emergencies.
Discussions focused on increasing the resilience of the health system; and the need to be better prepared to respond to health emergencies, disease outbreaks, or natural disasters. This is to build a strong health system that is resilient and can respond quickly when problems arise.
They also discussed how to improve health financing to ensure sufficient resources are available to support health initiatives. Discussions included finding new sources of funding, ensuring the quality of health facilities, and increasing government investment.
The visit of Ihekweazu demonstrates the commitment of the World Health Organization to support Ethiopia in its health journey, said Health Minister Dr. Mekdes Daba, requesting the support of the World Health Organization to help the government achieve its goal of improving health services.
