The Global Health Initiative delegation met with the Minister of Health, Dr. Mekdes Daba, to discuss health systems strengthening.

Representatives of the Global Health Initiative (GHI) held a productive discussion with the Minister of Health, Dr. Mekdes Daba, on key health issues and areas for collaboration. The discussion focused on advancing the Lusaka Agenda, improving accountability, and sharing Ethiopia's successful experiences with other Lusaka Agenda members.

Dr. Mekdes outlined Ethiopia's efforts to improve its health system; outlined the health sector's focus areas; and expanded the Lusaka Agenda to strengthen health policy implementation; This includes increasing joint financing between government and non-governmental organizations for health programs; sharing best practices in leveraging donor funding through pooling of resources; strengthening malaria prevention efforts; and leveraging technical assistance to support health reforms and capacity building.

The GHI delegation visited primary health services during its field visit to Sidama Region. They discussed increasing investments in medical supplies and the digital health sector; expanding training for health workers to improve service delivery; strengthening Ethiopia’s information system to combat malaria and other health challenges; and continuing to work with the Ministry of Health to strengthen the country’s accountability framework and national audit, and sharing the Ethiopian model with other Lusaka Agenda members.

The meeting underscored the shared commitment to strengthening Ethiopia’s health system and creating effective, sustainable reforms. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to continued collaboration to improve health outcomes for all Ethiopians and advance global health initiatives.
