Health Minister Dr. Mekdes Dabba visited the voluntary surgical campaign being conducted by a team of over fifty surgeons from the Dawoodi Bohra community of India and East Africa at St. Paul’s Hospital Millennium College.

The surgical campaign is being conducted not only at St. Paul’s Hospital Millennium College but also at Alert Comprehensive Specialized Hospital. The team includes specialists and subspecialists in cardiac, liver, pancreatic, urinary tract, orthopedic, laparoscopic (without opening the abdomen) surgery, as well as eye and upper neck surgery, as well as many medical experts from the country.

Health Minister Dr. Mekdes Dabba held discussions with the surgical team and visited St. Paul’s Hospital Millennium College to observe the surgical campaign. Dr. Mekdes, who toured the surgical wards, also encouraged the specialists. She thanked the team for the surgical services and resource support provided on behalf of the beneficiary community and asked for the cooperation to continue.

The Minister appreciated the cooperation provided by his holiness Dr. Syedna mufaddal saifuddin, Head of the Dawood Bohra Community in India, who fully supported the surgical campaign, in creating a conducive environment for the surgery, and said that the bilateral cooperation would continue in the future.

Elbabor Buno, Chief Executive Officer of the Medical Services at the Ministry of Health, announced that for the first time in Ethiopia, a successful laparoscopic surgery for a pancreatic tumor was performed during the campaign. In addition to the surgery, the team donated medicines and supplies worth $150,000 and medical equipment worth $100,000.

Dr. Fikadu Negash, Medical Director of St. Paul's Hospital, said that the campaign has helped reduce the number of patients waiting in line for treatment at the hospital and help clients access services quickly, as well as greatly benefiting knowledge transfer.

Stating that the campaign will help strengthen bilateral cooperation in the health sector, Dr. Fikadu called for similar collaborative efforts to be expanded.

The campaign, which was held for three days at both hospitals, provided more than 400 free surgical services, with 210 patients receiving services at St. Paul's Hospital alone, said Dr. Sisay, Provost of the hospital.
