The Ethiopian Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ESOG) held its 33rd Annual Conference under the theme "Every women, Every newborn for a healthy future: the role of ESOG" and presented the Emblematic Leadership Award to Minister of Health Dr. Mekdes Daba.
Minister of Health Dr. Mekdes Daba received the award in the presence of the President of the International Federation of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, Professor Anna Beatrice Kihara, and the President of the Ethiopian Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, Dr. Hailemariam Senge. In her opening remarks, she noted that the Ethiopian Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists has made many contributions to saving the lives of mothers and infants and improving its services. Although the results achieved through the work are encouraging, the impact of maternal deaths on society and families is serious, so we must all work hard.
Dr. Mekdes Daba, who pointed out that maternal, child and youth health services are among the programs that are given priority in the health sector; said that human resource development and digitalization, health sector financing and domestic manufacturing are also being worked on with great attention, and that it is necessary to continue to work on the remaining tasks in this regard with determination and coordination.
Dr. Hailemariam Senge, President of the Ethiopian Obstetricians and Gynecologists Association, who mentioned that the association has up to 1000 members, said that the causes of infant deaths are asphyxiation, premature birth and infection, and that postpartum hemorrhage, high blood pressure and infection are the causes of maternal deaths, and that research should be conducted to reduce maternal and child deaths in the future, and that the research should be translated into practice.
Minister of Health Dr. Mekdes Daba thanked Dr. Hailemariam Senge for his exemplary leadership and service in the field and asked for his continued support and close monitoring.
At the forum, institutions, leaders and experts who have made outstanding contributions through research results and outstanding contributions, as well as newly-joined doctors, were recognized.
