Ethiopian Diaspora Volunteer Medical Service Doctors Team Donates Over $430,000 in Medical Equipment

The team provided $430,000 in medical equipment and training to conduct voluntary neurosurgery at Jimma University Medical Center, Zewditu Memorial Hospital, and Black Lion Hospital.

This partnership demonstrates the potential of Ethiopian diaspora expertise and international cooperation, said Health Minister Dr. Mekdes Daba; and called for continued support to strengthen neurosurgery and stroke care in Ethiopia.

Health Minister Dr. Mekdes Dabba visited the voluntary surgical campaign being conducted by a team of over fifty surgeons from the Dawoodi Bohra community of India and East Africa at St. Paul’s Hospital Millennium College.

The surgical campaign is being conducted not only at St. Paul’s Hospital Millennium College but also at Alert Comprehensive Specialized Hospital. The team includes specialists and subspecialists in cardiac, liver, pancreatic, urinary tract, orthopedic, laparoscopic (without opening the abdomen) surgery, as well as eye and upper neck surgery, as well as many medical experts from the country.

The Beginning Fund, which aims to improve maternal and child health services in sub-Saharan Africa, will work with African governments to save 300,000 newborn deaths and provide quality medical services to 34 million mothers and children by 2030, it was announced at the launch event.

The official ceremony held at the Canada Hospital in Abu Dhabi Al Ain was attended by His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed, President of Abu Dhabi.

Ethiopia, Russia sign MoU to strengthen health cooperation

The Ethiopian Ministry of Health and the Russian Consumer Rights Protection and Human Wellbeing Monitoring Service have signed a Memorandum of Understanding. The signing took place on the sidelines of the first-ever Russia-Africa Emergency Response Teams Exercise and Seminar Program, an agreement aimed at strengthening cooperation between the two countries on health emergencies.

First Russian-African Joint Exercise and Workshop on Health Emergencies Begins

For the first time, Russian-African rapid response teams have begun an exercise and workshop to help them prepare for health emergencies such as diseases and epidemics. Alongside the joint exercise, a training seminar on “Rapid Response to Emergency Situations of a Sanitary and Epidemiological Nature” has also been held to exchange knowledge and improve teamwork.

The 2025 Nutrition for Growth Summit was held in Paris, France, at the global level. This forum is held every four years and is a platform where United Nations member states and partners express their commitment to nutrition development.

The 2021 Global Summit on Nutrition for Growth held in Tokyo, Japan, set goals to be implemented by all United Nations member states, especially those implementing the Scaling Up Nutrition Movement, through government and partner efforts.

A Stanford Graduate School delegation met with Ethiopian Minister of Health Dr. Mekdes Daba to discuss efforts to improve the country’s health care system and health outcomes.

The delegation visited Ethiopia’s Pharmaceutical Supplies Services and other health care facilities to gain a first-hand understanding of the country’s health infrastructure.

Minister of Health Dr. Mekdes Daba discussed on-going health and nutrition programs with Action Against Hunger Ethiopia CEO Dr. Charles Oubah. Action Against Hunger is working on nutrition programs in six regions, namely Amhara, Tigray, Oromia, Gambella, Benishangul Gumuz and Somali, in 45 districts and four refugee camps.
