The India-Ethiopia Pharmaceutical Business Forum has begun.
The forum will bring together key stakeholders from both countries to discuss opportunities in the pharmaceutical sector.
Minister of Health Dr. Mekdes Daba said the government is committed to increasing domestic pharmaceutical production; she explained that the government has created favorable investment conditions, such as the Kilinto Special Industrial Zone, to support the sector. “The pharmaceutical sector in Ethiopia is expected to grow, which will create great opportunities for Indian companies,” said Dr. Mekdes, adding that India is a reliable pharmaceutical supplier and will further strengthen their partnership.
The Indian Ambassador to Ethiopia, Shri Anil Kumar Rai, has stressed the importance of building strong relationships between Indian manufacturers and the growing Ethiopian pharmaceutical industry, noting that India is a world leader in pharmaceutical products.
Ambassador Anil Kumar said that Ethiopia’s pharmaceutical sector is growing rapidly and that this presents a great opportunity for Indian companies to contribute to Ethiopia’s efforts to increase domestic pharmaceutical production. He added that this collaboration will strengthen Ethiopia’s healthcare system and improve access to essential medicines.
Speaking at the forum, Dr. Zeleke Temesgen, Commissioner of the Ethiopian Investment Commission, invited Indian pharmaceutical manufacturers to invest in Ethiopia. He said that Ethiopia could benefit greatly from India’s experience in the pharmaceutical sector and assured that the Ethiopian government will give priority to supporting companies seeking to enter the market.
The Director General of the Ethiopian Food and Drug Authority, Heran Gerba, highlighted the importance of quality medicines in achieving universal health coverage. She also noted that the authority is not only regulating the sector but also supporting its growth and development.
The forum focused on the potential of India and Ethiopia to further enhance cooperation in the pharmaceutical industry, which will enable Ethiopian citizens to benefit from better healthcare services. By strengthening partnerships and attracting investment, Ethiopia will be able to strengthen its domestic pharmaceutical production and reduce its dependence on imported medicines.
